Save with the Creatures which I made, and those
I by conversing cannot these erect
All human thoughts come short, Supream of things;
Permissive, and acceptance found, which gaind [ 435 ]
Whereto th Almighty answerd, not displeasd.
Thou in thy secresie although alone,

Like of his like, his Image multiplid,
But in degree, the cause of his desire

He ceasd, I lowly answerd. To attaine
How have I then with whom to hold converse

And through all numbers absolute, though One;

The highth and depth of thy Eternal wayes
From all Eternitie, for none I know
But Man by number is to manifest

Is no deficience found; not so is Man,
Of thy Associates, Adam, and wilt taste
What thinkst thou then of mee, and this my State,

By conversation with his like to help,

No pleasure, though in pleasure, solitarie.

Best with thy self accompanied, seekst not
Second to mee or like, equal much less.
Beneath what other Creatures are to thee?
